Canadian
Forces To Provide Air Cargo-Handling Support In Sierra Leone

OTTAWA - The Honourable Art Eggleton, Minister of National
Defence, announced today that approximately 30 Canadian Forces personnel
will be sent to Sierra Leone to increase cargo off-loading capacity
at Lungi Airport. The Canadian assistance comes after a United Nations
request to help support the additional airflow expected over the next
four to six weeks, as additional UN troops deploy to the war-torn
country.
"It was agreed that we could contribute Canadian Forces airport
support personnel and equipment for this ever-increasing critical
UN mission," said Minister Eggleton. "I am proud that we
can provide an effective contribution to the international military
effort in Sierra Leone," added Mr. Eggleton.
The Canadian contingent will include two Mobile Air Movement Section
(MAMS) teams with its own maintenance and communication technicians.
The British forces will provide security, logistical and medical support
to the Canadians. The Canadian cargo-handling specialists will be
deployed and operating in theatre within 10 days at an incremental
cost to Canada of approximately 1.1 million dollars.
